The Australian Writers’ Guild is the professional association representing writers for stage, screen, radio and online and has protected and promoted their creative and professional interests for 60 years.

The Guild’s vision is to see performance writing and performance writers thrive as a dynamic and integral part of Australian storytelling, shaping, reflecting and enhancing the Australian cultural voice in all its diversity.

The AWG’s purpose is to promote the role and recognition of – and rewards for – performance writing in Australian society and culture; to pursue a thriving industry environment; to protect and advance creative rights and opportunities and to promote excellence and improve professional standards, conditions and remuneration.


Executive and management support

  • Diary management and meeting arrangements for the Executive Director and management team
  • Assisting in the preparation of papers for quarterly meetings, committee meetings and AGMs, and producing minutes and reports when required
  • Supporting administrative and other compliance, such as grant acquittals and online regulatory work
  • Administrative tasks as required to assist the Executive Director

Membership and communications support

  • Answering the phone and dealing with basic enquiries during membership officer lunch breaks and periods of leave
  • Maintaining membership records when required
  • When the Guild’s new database is implemented, running reports and providing updates as requested

Professional development and organisational project support

  • Provide administrative support for awards and other projects as required, which may include venue bookings, travel bookings, judging administration, and assisting with grant acquittals
  • Research support for the Guild’s projects

Business support

  • Dealing with incoming business correspondence
  • Data entry, using Xero and MYOB where required for basic accounts administration
  • Performing banking and administrative tasks
  • Working with external accountants and suppliers where required, including regarding the AWG’s building
  • General office duties managing entry cards, phones, supplies
  • Maintaining files and documents in the Guild’s cloud
  • Assisting in producing reports


Our ideal candidate may be someone at the beginning of their career, or someone looking to start fresh in a new role. This is a junior role within the Guild supporting all our functions. They will report to our Executive Director, but require strong collaboration skills across the Guild as they provide support to almost every role. The candidate we are seeking has:

  • Well developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise and negotiate with staff and members at all levels
  • Experience or the ability to work with Microsoft Office software
  • Proven ability to be self-motivated, to utilise initiative, tact and discretion when resolving problems
  • The ability to learn new processes quickly, and follow instructions in detail with accuracy
  • Organisational, research and planning skills, including the ability to prioritise workloads and work flexibly to meet deadlines in order to achieve desired outcomes and timeframes
  • Good time management skills, including the ability to work autonomously, productively and positively within a small self-managing environment

Business qualifications such as Certificate I, II or more will be looked on favourably but are not essential. This role is full-time, with flexible remote work conditions in place. The Guild’s office is in the Sydney CBD very close to public transport.
