Australia’s most acclaimed scriptwriters and playwrights came out from behind the scenes at the 42nd Annual AWGIE Awards held on 28 August 2010 at Doltone House by Sydney Harbour.

Warwick Thornton’s Samson and Delilah, was awarded the Major AWGIE for the most outstanding Australian script of the year, showing that great screenwriting goes beyond the dialogue. Already hailed as an Australian classic, Samson and Delilah was also awarded the AWGIE for Original Feature Film.

Multi-award winning writer Patricia Cornelius took out three awards, including the prestigious $40,000 Richard Wherrett Prize for her confronting piece, Tenderness – Slut, which also picked up the AWGIE for Theatre for Young Audiences. Patricia also accepted an AWGIE for her work on the new Australian feature film Blessed, co-written with Andrew Bovell, Melissa Reeves and literary wunderkind, Christos Tsoilkas. Andrew Bovell also received an AWGIE for his searing play with environmental undertones, When the Rain Stops Falling which won for Stage.

Strong and often challenging themes run through the winners list in 2009 with Kelly Lefever, Dot West, Mitch Torres and Wayne Blair winning for the taut and involving outback drama The Circuit (Original Mini Series); the treatment of refugees addressed in Saved (Original Telemovie) by Belinda Chayko, and Louis Nowra and Rachel Perkins being acknowledged for the groundbreaking documentary series First Australians.

Comedy writers took home the awards for Good News Week (Comedy Sketch or Light Entertainment) and Review with Myles Barlow (Comedy Situation/ Narrative), while perennial favourite drama Home & Away (Television Serial) and newcomer action series Rush (Television Series) shone in television categories.
