Storyline turns 21 and in this special anniversary summer edition Irene Korsten talks with some of Australia’s top comedy writers and finds out just what it takes to write funny. Laura Scrivano chats with Kate Mulvany, who has two plays opening in February, The Danger Age in Brisbane and The Seed in Sydney. Stephen Sewell and Dee McLachlan fill us in on some exciting new cross-platform projects they will be working on over the coming year and the AFTRS’ John Lonie outlines new courses for 2008 designed to empower writers of the future. In Outspoken poet, playwright and former prisoner of war Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig, a playwright, writes about his experiences in Sudan and Australia and the importance writing has played in his remarkable journey and with The Season at Sarsaparilla now playing in Melbourne we thought it was the right time to open The Vault on the plays of Patrick White. Issue 20 of Storyline our feature writer Pauline Webber examines the way writers deal with the idea of class in Australia in the twenty-first century. She asks why middle class stories are missing from our screens and why the suburbs are commonly depicted as a working class ‘wild west?’ We also revisit Who’s Afraid of the Working Class, a play borne out of the class struggle in Australia.
