MINDFRAME STAGE AND SCREEN
Throughout 2007, the Australian Writers’ Guild has been working with the Hunter Institute of Mental Health and SANE Australia to develop a resource for writers of film, television and theatre to use when writing about mental illness and suicide.

In March 2007, the Australian Writers’ Guild brought together eight scriptwriters with people directly affected by mental illness and those working in mental health. This workshop established the need for resources that would enhance the development of more truthful and authentic portrayals of mental health issues rather than portrayals that perpetuate current myths and stereotypes. These eight writers then worked on the development of the materials.

As a result of this work a resource booklet and website have been developed for performance writers to provide facts and statistics about mental illness and suicide and accounts of real life experiences. You can find more information at www.mindframe-media.info

We trust you will find these resources useful in your research and writing.

This free resource would not be possible without the generous assistance of the Australian Government Department of Health & Ageing, Hunter Institute of Mental Health, SANE Australia, the National Media & Mental Health Group, and many other scriptwriters, mental health professionals, carers and people living with a mental illness. Special thanks to the Mindframe Stage and Screen Team – Michael Winter, Kristen Dunphy, Rob George, Fiona Kelly, Suzie Miller, Shane Porteous, Gina Roncoli and Greg Waters.
